Nanjing is a world-renowned historical and cultural city, as well as an important central city and megacity in eastern China that is moving towards modernisation and internationalisation, where the charm of the ancient capital and modern civilisation meet, and where rich culture and youthful vitality merge into one.

Nanjing is one of the most athletic cities in China, attracting a variety of international sporting events and possessing excellent organisational capabilities for top international events, having hosted international events such as the 2013 Asian Youth Games, the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, the 2016 World Speed Roller Skating Championships, the 2017 World All-Sport Roller Skating Championships, the 2018 Badminton World Championships, the World Women's Volleyball Grand Prix, and the second edition of the FIBA Men's Basketball World Cup 2019 (Nanjing) and other international events. Meanwhile, international events such as the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25 will also be held from 21 March to 23 March 2025 in Nanjing.

From 2008-2018, Nanjing has hosted the National Indoor Athletics Championships for 11 consecutive years.

In the future, Nanjing will meticulously organise international competitions, grasp the practical matters for the benefit of the people in sports, deeply push forward the reform and development of football, strive to create a national "model city of national sports and fitness", ensure the leading position of competitive sports in the country, and actively push forward the accelerated development of the sports industry, so that the city can be more vibrant and self-confident, and be built into a "world famous city of sports" as scheduled. The city will be more energetic and confident, and will be built into a "world famous sports city" on schedule and stride towards internationalisation.
