On 26 November 2017, the WA announced that it had awarded the hosting right of the 18th IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2020 to Nanjing, which is the first time that China has hosted the World Indoor Athletics Championships, and is the world's highest-level indoor track and field event that has settled in China after the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
Since the WA organised the event, every World Indoor Championships in Athletics has become an annual event.
The successful bid to host the World Indoor Athletics Championships fills the gap that China has never hosted the event, will further promote the popularity of track and field in China, increase the enthusiasm of the public to participate in track and field, and will provide a strong support for the continuous enhancement of the influence of the city of Nanjing.
In 2022, the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25 will be held from 21 to 23 March 2025 at the Indoor Athletics Stadium of the Nanjing Sports Training Centre, as agreed by the WA, the China Association of Athletics Federations (CAA) and the WIC 25 LOC after joint discussions.
A total of 26 events, including the 60m, 400m, high jump, long jump, pole vault and shot put, will be held during the three-day event, when the world's top track and field athletes from around the globe will also gather in Nanjing to compete for glory.
