Wang Nan, Vice Chairman of China Athletics Association Elected as the New IAAF Director

On September 25th, local time, the 52nd IAAF Congress was held in Doha, Qatar. The General Assembly voted to elect a new IAAF President, Vice Chairman and Director. Among them, Wang Nan, vice chairman of China Athletics Association, was successfully elected as the new IAAF director for a term of 2023. Nearly 500 representatives from 206 member associations attended the conference. During the election, the current IAAF President Sebastian Newbold Coe, Baron Coe (UK) successfully re-elected the new IAAF President with 203 votes.

Sergey Bubka (Ukraine), Jeffrey Gardner (Novk Island), Nawaf (Saudi Arabia), and Simona Restorp (Chile, female) were elected as Vice-Chairmen. Wang Nan, vice chairman of the China Athletics Association, was elected as a member of the board of directors. After Lou Dapeng served as the vice chairman of the IAAF, Luo Chaoyi and Du Zhaocai served as directors of the IAAF, Wang Nan became the first female officer in the history of Asia and China to serve on the IAAF Board of Directors (for a four-year term). After the World Championships, Du Zhaocai, deputy director of the State Sports General Administration and vice chairman of the Chinese Football Association, retired from the duty of IAAF.

Wang Nan, who was elected as the director of the IAAF for the first time, said that the successful election was due to the continuous enhancement of the comprehensive national strength of the motherland and the continuous improvement of international influence in the 70 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, especially in the 40 years of reform and opening up. In recent years, China's track and field has broken through innovation, adhered to the characteristic development path, and has continuously achieved fruitful results. It has been unanimously affirmed by the international track and field community. The Chinese track and field personnel represented by Liu Xiang and Su Bingtian have used their excellent competitive performance and tenacious struggle. The sports spirit has won international acclaim. In addition, over the years, the Chinese Athletics Association has actively participated in world track and field events, including many track and field events including the World Athletics Championships and several important international conferences in China. Next year, the World Indoor Athletics Championships will be held in Nanjing. China's contribution to the development of the world's track and field sports is obvious to all, and it has also been recognized by the IAAF family. The continuous expansion of the international circle of friends and the enhancement of the right to speak have laid a solid foundation for Chinese track and field people to actively participate in international track and field affairs.

Wang Nan said that in the future, the China Association for the track and field will continue to fulfill its responsibilities and commitments, further strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the IAAF, make more contributions to the development of the world track and field sport, and continue to work hard for the progress of Chinese track and field.

The Congress also adopted the proposal of the IAAF Board of Governors not to restore the qualifications of the Russian Association. In addition, the meeting heard reports from various committees and regions and discussed several issues related to the future development of international track and field.
